Default I need your help...........

Recently I bought a 1997 Sidekick JS 4Dr. There was a knock coming from the motor and there was little or no power except when I engage the power switch. I was told that it was a connecting rod knock. However, a week ago on leaving Advance Auto (where I bought motor oil to do my own oil change) the engine stopped functioning. It would start up when cold(with absolutely no power) and when it begins to get warm it cuts off.

I do have some questions that I hope you all will be able to answer for me:

a) What could have caused the engine (16 valve, fuel injected) to have little or no power?

b) Could a 1.8L be used to replace the present 1.6L engine and what are all the changes/additions that I must do in order to accommodate the 1.8L?

c) Finally, I am in need of an engine either the 1.6/1.8 I need you help in finding one for a reasonable price.

I thank you all.

when catalytic convertors go bad they can often cause a severe loss in power....also, my roommate had a 2 door with a 1.6, and it ran awful...he blew the motor, and bought a reman engine, and it still ran poorly..
