Carb settings

Owned a Gixxer 750wp (1994) uk spec for the past 5 years. Had the unfortunate event that had to replace carbs. I cant seem to find out the pilot mixture settings. (standard 112.5-115 mains and 35 pilots). The manual (on disc) suggests that this should be set at 1-1/4 turns and the needle on the 3rd from top notch. The bike runs absolute c**p at these settings. I've turned them out to 2 turns and tried resetting the needles on 2-3-4 from the top, but just cant get to pick up from tick over to 4k. No matter what the settings it seems to run great from 4k-13k. Has anyone got any ideas on what Suzuki recommend the initial set up settings to be. I've looked at Dynojet website and they suggest on stage 1 settings the pilot mixture srews to be set at 2-1/2 turns. Should this be my starting point for standard jets!!!!! help!!!!
