Default 93 GSXR 750 - rev counter off the scale

My 93 GSXR 750 has just had the rev counter go off the scale at modertae revs and stay there. At tick over it registers between 5 and 6 thou. Makes no difference with the lights on or off.
Could anyone out there confirm whether this is the rectifier / regulator - or could it be something else. No other issues at all with the bike, engine runs fine etc.
Cheers

Maybe its time for a new tach cable.. The end which feeds into the motor may be stripped, therfore making it very sensitive.. Only thing i can think of..
