Default engine service light on

Hi, everyone
I got my 03 Aerio couple months ago and did not do any of modification on the car (yet). The "engine service soon" light came on the panel and I have no idea how to turn it off. I read the owner's manual said I need to bring the car back to dealer. Can anyone give me idea how to fix the problem? I dont really want to get rip off by the dealer. Please help me !!!

Take it somewhere like AutoZone and they will plug in to the computer and read the codes for you, usually for free, in hopes of selling you the parts you'll need to fix it. It could be as simple as the gas tank lid being open or as serious as internal engine repair. A good manual will help.

unplug the battery and keep it unpluged for about 20 min. then plug the battery back in. if the check engine light comes on again then take it somewhere. the same thing happened to me. I had low oil and the light came on. i unpluged the battery and waited 20 min and plugded back in and it was gone. hasnt come back on since.
