Default Rigid strut?

Hey there! I'm a new rider and new to working on bikes. I'm a pretty good parts changer on a car and finding bike work easier so far. I have an 86 Intruder VS750. It was passed on to me and runs pretty well. Cylinder one misfires from time to time but I have a couple ideas of what it could be. The light wires, temp switch and cooling fan have been tinkered with some missing, some not connected, some wired constant. I'll let you guess which has been what, but I digress. My real question is a s follows. If I were to take two pieces of solid round stock, grind the ends to a width that would fit my strut mount tops and bottoms, drill mount holes and bolt in place of strut would this be sufficient support? Bolt is held on either side where strut mounts so I see so issue. If you think otherwise or have seen something similar let me know about it please. My original plan was to build some out of several strips of rebar welded (maybe twisted as well) together but I don't think it would be strong enough.
