'85 Intruder Starter Problems
I have an old Intruder that won't start anymore. Here's as much information as i think i can provide:
- It's not the battery
- all connections are fine from the starter switch, clutch interlock switch, engine kill switch, and ignition switch
- When i try to start the bike the fuel pump kicks in but the starter does nothing
- I've tested the leads going to the Starter Relay from the battery and it gets 12 volts, the connection coming from the switches to the relay is roughly 9 volts. When I test the connection coming FROM the Starter relay to the Starter itself it shows nothing so my best guess is that the starter relay needs replacement but i'm not brilliant in this area so feedback would be nice.
The other question I have is if anybody knows what the voltage coming from the switches is supposed to be.
The bike is an '85 Intruder 750 but i bought it as a rebuild so i'm not 100% certain as to what parts are original and what aren't.
UPDATE
Looks like it was a relay problem but i still can't get it to start. Here's what's happening now;
Starter engages and seems to be working fine
I replaced the plugs and tested to make sure they were sparking fine
When i try to start it now the starter cranks and every once in a while i will get a backfire.
The backfire isn't exclusive to one cylinder as i've seen it out of both exhaust pipes but it doesn't alternate between the two, it seems random.
Any thoughts?

I was reading and saw your post. I recently got a Intruder 700 86'. I got it knowing it was a project bike but didn't know how much of one. It seems as though the previous owner tried to take it apart or something and the wiring was all messed up. Now I have gotten the lights to come on and everything it just won't turn over. Fuses are good and the relays are too. Have a full charge on the battery and connections are tight. The only thing is that the positive wire coming off the battery I'm not sure that it is correct as well as the wire off the circuit breaker. Might you have an answer for me on this? Did you ever get yours going?
