Default Hot Exhaust Pipes -- how to protect legs

I bought a bike with Cobra exhaust on it. The heat shields seem to mount too close to the pipes. So they get very hot right under your leg by the seat. I've melted my pants on the pipe while riding.
Does anyone have a good looking, yet easy, way to prevent the heat shield from getting so hot? maybe space it away from the pipe somehow? or wrap it with header wrap under the heat shield?
