Leaking fuel, hesitation, no start

Leaking fuel, hesitation, no start
I have a 91 vx800. The other day as I was heading into a strong headwind doing 75, several times the bike would slow down to 65. Then it would regain speed. Once the road curved and took me out of the headwind, the bike resumed regular function (acceleration and steady speed). The next morning it started normally, then died 100 feet down the road and would not restart. I tried for over fifteen minutes trying to start it. It kept cranking but would never start up. approximately five hours later I heard reports that it was leaking gas from under the tank.
Does anyone have suggestions on where I should look first. Is the tank needing to be removed to look for a leaking hose? Does the carb need to tuned?
