Default lean rear cylinder

When I bought my 2003 Intruder 1400 it had noisy drag pipes on it. I am 80 and my hearing already sucks from a lifetime of loud pipes and good Jazz fests, so I got stock stuff. The rear pipe is at a bit of an off-angle and the copper gasket did't seal well. I installed glass fiber yarn but it still makes an irritating "PFAPP" when I get on it. The rear also pops and backfires a lot on deceleration or even at idle. Could the leak cause that or do I need to "go into the interior" of the carb to mess with jets?
