Default My new suki

Hi everyone, I have just bought an old (1980) suzuki SC100 cxg (whizzkid) but I am having trouble with the ignition system. Often I will get no response when I turn the key except the two red lights on the dashboard. I have to use a screwdriver to short the starter motor to start the car, which I don't want to continue.
I have been told that it could be the battery (fully charged, I'm sure of it...) or the starter motor or the alternator or the ballast (not sure what that is... or where) or perhaps loose wiring.

My question is how do I test these different parts of the car to isolate and identify the problem?

any help, suggestions, advice or links would be greatly appreciated. (I have emailed the sc100 club in britain, but no response)
