rmz 250 timing

Default rmz 250 timing

I have a 04 rmz 250, i just rebuilt the top end but when i set the timing marks there right until i put in the timing tensioner, then it goes out a few degrees. Is this normal, or do i need to keep trying? any help would be appreciated.
