Hi, I recently bought a 2001 Grand Vitara, the engine is very loud, when i rev the engine above 5000rpm in neutral, it sounded like a truck, is it normal? thanks for any opinions.

 

Hi, It is very hard to try and diagnose anything without actually hearing or seeing the vehicle. Short of something like a heat shield etc being loose you might want to try! If my memory serves me correectly I believe that the 2001 had problems with the timing chain tensioner(s) breaking down on the V6 and that there was a recall on them as well. You might check that out! I believe I read a response saying basically what do you expect "it is a truck". Don't believe it, the V6 is not only a very smooth engine at all rpm but advanced in that it is all aluminium. The only slight draw back in my opinion is that it has a shorter stroke than its bore. But overall appears to be an excellent engine.

I have the noise from the tensioners and I wasn't aware that there was a recall although there should be, it's a $2000 repair at the dealer, I've been told that most of my noise is from an exhaust leak at the engine that I am researching how to fix
