Default 94 dr 350 shifter wont rebound

The title says it all. After I remove the clutch cover to reseal due to a bad gasket, after its all back together the shifter will not rebound to position itself for the next gear. You must manually do it. The bike shifts through all the gears but its so annoying and is obviously not good. Any advice on what could be the cause?

The pawls for the shift return might have spit out a spring or something like that. That would allow you to shift, but the shifter won't return to it's middle position. If you don't have a service or clymer manual, I'd definitey get one and take a look at the pawls. I just rebuilt the bottom end on my RMX 250 and those little springs in the pawls are a serious PITA. I've attached a pic with the mechanism and pawls from my RMX. I would think your DR has something similar.

Good Luck
