Default RE: ENGINE CHATTERING ABOVE 9000 RPM

Hi Mr. GIXXER75050,

Adjusting the valves is not a major deal. No need to pull the motor, just the valve cover. There are a couple of valve adjustment tutorials on my website, one for the older 8-valve motors and another for the 16-valve motors. The 16-valve pictorial should be close enough to get you at least familiar with the procedure. Always check the shop manual specific to your bike before attempting any maintenance.

Hopefully it is just a valve clearance issue, and hasn't damaged the motor yet. It could also be that the cam chain may have jumped a tooth and the cams are out of timing. Could it be an oil pressure issue? How is the oil level? Are there any blockages? Are you sure it's from the top of the motor and not the bottom? Either way, I hope you take care of it before something bad happens. A 30,000 mile bike with no history means that you have to take proactive maintenance measures. Fix it before it breaks.

Hard starting when warm could be something unrelated, like carburetion, leaks in the air intake system (making your mix lean), weak battery, low voltage at the coils, iffy charging system, even bad plugs or plug caps, etc.

Above 9000rpm? Gosh, my bike redlines at 9500 rpm! Of course, it's 30 years old.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
