03 XL-7 4x4 Issue

I own a 2003 XL-7. It has a manual 4x4 shifter next to the front passenger seat. After leaving a snow covered road, and shifting back into 2wd mode, it seems the 4x4 is still engaged. Engine rpm is high, especially over 40 mph. Stopping and putting transmission in park or reverse usually disengages it. Does anyone have any suggestions what is causing this? Thanks.
