Default Battery Tender

I’m new to the biking world. I have a 2012 Suzuki C50T and have two questions. The bike started perfectly at the store but would crank when I got it home. It made the typical dead battery clicking noise. The battery was dated 06/17. Can a motorcycle battery die at one year. They only have a 3 month warranty so they must be cheap. Maybe the battery froze last winter. Is it ok/wise to leave the battery tender plugged in all year? Will it hurt anything? Throttle adjustment, mine travels about an inch before engaging. Do these bikes have the typical locknut adjusters just inside the grips?
