bike shuts off

bike shuts off
I have a 1991 intruder 1400 that I am trying to get back on the road. I have finally got it to start and run, but when I put it into gear from neutral the bike shuts off. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
