Default Gixxer 750 won't hold charge

I just bought a used 750 and the battery doesn't seem to hold a charge. Once its charged it runs fine for a day or 2 then dies. Is this just a battery issue or could it be my alternator?

Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,

Make sure your battery is fully charged. What is the resting voltage? It should be around 12.5 volts or better. Start your bike. What is the idle voltage? Hopefully it's 13v or better. Rev your bike to around 4000rpm. The voltage should be 14v or better. If your voltages measure low, it could be the rectifier/regulator or the stator. Further testing is necessary. Make sure all of your electrical connections and grounds are clean. You can also have your battery load tested at a shop or auto parts store.

"The Stator Papers" is based on the older Suzuki GS bikes, but the principles are the same. Check it out here: http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_statorfacts.htm

Your manual should have a testing procedure specific to your bike to determine if the stator (generator), r/r, battery, or other component is at fault.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
