Default '97 Suzuki overheating

I have a 1997 Suzuki Intruder VS800 that suddenly is overheating! I only rode it 2 yesterday and when I got home it smelled hot and my pipes are now blued! I know the coolant level is full. I never heard the fan come on, however. A friend suggested I jump the fan wires and see if the motor is working. If it is, does this mean the sensor is defective?

Any other suggestions appreciated!

Dave

if the fan motor works by jumping the wires then, yes, the sensor could be faulty but don't overlook the possibility of bad connections. clean them the best you can and see whether the fan kicks in when engine is hot.

Update! When I pulled the cowling off the radiator, I found that I had forgotten to actually tighten it down! Fortunately, I didn't go very far and didn't dump the coolant out. It now works as it should.
